AFTERSCHOOL FOR ALL RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, I (we) recognize our children and youth of the Commonwealth of Kentucky are the future and will provide the leadership, creativity, and productivity to strengthen and sustain the quality of life in communities,

WHEREAS, I (we) am (are) fully aware that our children and youth have need of common supports and educational opportunities to succeed in our universities, workplaces, and neighborhoods,

WHEREAS, I (we) am (are) alarmed that many of our children and youth are more prone to participate in risky behaviors between the hours of 3 and 6 pm, and have need to increase their participation in physical activity and adopt healthy behaviors,

WHEREAS, I (we) am (are) deeply disturbed that many of our children and youth lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math skills over the summer months; low-income children and youth lose more than two months of reading achievement over the summer months; and more than half of the 9th grade achievement gap between lower and higher family income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities during the elementary years,

WHEREAS, I (we) note with deep regret that one fourth of ninth grade students in the Commonwealth of Kentucky will not graduate with their peers four years later,

WHEREAS, I (we) agree with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan that “afterschool helps youth develop academically but, more importantly, it helps them find their passion and better-themselves long-term,”

THEREFORE, I (we) strongly support experiential, hands-on extended learning opportunities for all children and youth in an intellectually challenging environment, that include:

  1. Access and Support from Adult Mentors and Advisors,
  2.
  3. Experiential Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) and English Language Arts Instruction,
  4.
  5.  Opportunities in Art, Music, Theater, Global Literacy and Foreign Languages,
  6.
  7. Participation in Recreation and Physical Fitness Activities, and Nutrition Education, and
  8.
  9. Workplace skills of Problem Solving, Decision Making and Teamwork;

THEREFORE, I (we) resolve to support our children and youth by working together to provide them with access to high-quality experiences before school, after school and during the summer months to ensure that all of our children and youth are safe, healthy, engaged, supported, and academically challenged.
